Paperman (2012)

Quick Summary: This is a 7 minute film so it would probably be easier if you just watched it yourself here.

Feeling: warm

This is just a nice little story that feels a little like an indie music video. As we saw in Amour, the creators rely on simplicity to convey a message. The film is all in black and white and with no dialogue. I know that most films not so many years ago were in black and white and with no dialogue, but in today’s context this is making a point. This plain backdrop allows the love story to be the color and music of the film. Of course, we can talk about some themes involved like fate, bureaucracy, adventure and such. But you can appreciate those however you wish. This is just a nice little piece of story and animation to brighten up your day a bit.

True Facts: does this deserve an oscar?

I haven’t seen the other nominated movies, but I’m not sure this is too deserving of an oscar. While it is well executed, I don’t think it brings too much to the table that I haven’t already seen from other Disney shorts. But I do always enjoy a nice love story!

Grade: B+
